A percale printed with twisting branches bearing fruit and foliage, punctuated by nests, exotic birds and Mandarin Chinese figures, a man on a swing, a woman with a parasol. Silk fabrics with Chinese designs were the consequence of the influence of the East and Far East, combined with the taste for splendour and the court’s imagination The popularity of Chinese ornamentation or “chinoiserie” was at its height in the 18th century. The Marquise de Pompadour, a shareholder of the French East India Company, widely contributed to the popularity of these Chinoiseries ordering Chinese-inspired fabrics from designers in Lyon and, more particularly, Jean Pillement.
